ABOUT

My name is Marshall Woodruff and I have been making leather goods for many years. I started out in the 60’s in College Park next to the University of MD. What a market! Our shoppe made thousands of sandals, purses, belts, vests, etc. popular with the students and the Hippie crowd of the 60’s.

As time went on I opened a shoppe in Georgetown, “The Cobbler Shoppe of Georgetown” on Wisconsin Ave where I repaired shoes, made leather goods and eventually expanded to making custom dress shoes. The shoppe was voted Best in DC by the Washingtonian Magazine and City Paper year after year.

At my shoppe, I was fortunate to have met an older French shoemaker who had once owned a salon in Paris.  At the time, I had the lasts, leather, equipment and findings for shoe making.

I was learning to craft shoes on my own and thought I was doing great until a master critiques your work. You then realize that there is so much more to learn. I became Gaston’s apprentice, ha, in my own shoppe and we worked well together for several years. Making custom made shoes in Washington was very successful.

The Cobbler Shoppe did leather work for many customers who included the White House, the Kennedy Center, the Washington Opera Company, the Washington Ballet Company, Broadway shows that came to the Kennedy Center such as Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera and movies companies that came to town to film.

Due to health, I stepped away from working with leather for a number of years while I recovered. I now have a small craft studio and getting back into making and creating leather goods. I will be doing craft fairs and word of mouth special orders.

My leather goods are very unique. Buying something I made for you will give you something that will last for decades. Why? They are made with the best leather and findings that I can obtain. Each piece is unique because everything is truly one of a  kind. I hand rub the dyes into the leather. Hand dying the leather brings out the natural look of the hide. This style may not be for everyone as some like the leather to look more  uniform. Depending on your personal taste, I can either hand stitch the item or stitch it on my sewing machine.

The main reasons for my success in the craft are that I love what I do, I use the best materials, I do it right the first time, I back my products, and I look forward to seeing my customers over and over again, year after year.
